Last week I put a call in to see Dr. Inga at Dupont whom we were referred to and who specializes in treating kids with Dentinogenesis Imperfecta (DI,brittle teeth) secondary to Osteogenesis Imperfecta. DI is not decay or anything like it, it's a genetic condition and cannot be resolved by any amount of extra cleaning or the like. The only treatment for this problem is sealing, bonding, capping and crowning. Essentially the same collagen defect that causes her dwarfism and her bones to break also causes her teeth to wear done, chip and break away in a painful manner. All this happens just as fast as her teeth start to come in. The dentist office had called me back on Friday just before they closed at 5pm to set up an appointment, however I unfortunately missed their call. So I planned on calling them back this Monday, but I totally forgot and only remembered yesterday to do so. I happened to be lucky yesterday and called right after they had a cancellation for today so they fit me in at 11 am this morning!
Well, we went to see Dr. Inga at Dupont and we were told that Sonya's teeth are not fully erupted yet and that her clinical crown (found by gliding the dental tool along and up the side of each tooth, it's where the root begins) isn't evident yet so we will have to wait until they are in all the way before we proceed with sealing, bonding, capping and crowning. Without the clinical crown the sealing, bonding, capping, or crowning will not stay put and would just fall off with her first bite into something yummy. I'm really bummed about this since her two upper front teeth have worn down significantly already to the point where they are almost gone. I was really hoping to walk in to the dentist's office and be told to set up an appointment in the next few weeks or so for the procedure. Her upper two front teeth broke through her gums at 8 months and were a good size. Here we are 7 and 1/2 months later and they are more than half gone from wear and they are not through all the way?! There's no way to determine how long it will take for them to fully erupt either! I'm frustrated by this and super worried that her teeth will wear down completely before they fully erupt! Then what, she'll have to go back to eating baby food until her permanent teeth come in at age 7?! Grrrr!!! She did have her teeth cleaned and treated with fluoride while we were there, which she absolutely hated every minute of. We will be going back in 6 months for another cleaning and fluoride treatment and to see how things look as far as the clinical crowns go. Thanks for listening to me vent!
Here are some photos of Miss Cutie Pie driving her new car! She loves going for long walks around the block and honking her horn at everyone she passes!

Sonya loves her new ride! It's just the perfect size for her and it has a seat belt for safety too!

"Hey! No tailgating me!"

Here she is checking out the birds flying overhead.

Just being cute!
All tuckered out in her highchair after a long day of play and dentistry!
How does she sleep in this position?!

Love Sonya's new car! We had one of those and it was a favorite with the kids! So sorry that you got some disappointing news at the dentist...it must be very hard to wait for Sonya's treatment. Hopefully her teeth will pick up the pace and be fully erupted sooner than you think. The sleeping pics are adorable! It is so funny that she can fall asleep in so many interesting places!
I'm sorry to hear Sonya's dentist appt didn't go as you had planned/hoped! Hopefully, her teeth will erupt before they wear down much more.
Sonya is such a cutie in her new car - Simon loves those pictures! He wants to bring his car along like that when we get together one time! :)
The sleeping pictures are precious! I often wonder if Simon is really comfortable in some of the positions he falls asleep in.
Sorry to hear that the appointment didn't go quite as you expected. Love the pics of Sonya passed out in her highchair, I have some real doozies of Kylie passed out too (think hanging upside down over the back of a bucket swing - similar to a back-bend in gymnastics). Nikki has a car like Sonya's too - she loves it! I use it to push her when Kylie wants to go on a bike/scooter ride because poor Nik just can't keep up on her bike/scooter.
Cole has that car {umm..not in pink} and he LOVES it too! So bummed to hear about Sonya's teeth! Hopefully they will erupt sooner and you can get to work helping her with them!
Sonya is such a cutie! Trace has the red version of the car and has gotten way beyond being pushed in it to pushing it over the the edge of the hill in our yard and riding down it - then making one of us drag him back to the top to do it again! Sorry to hear the appt didn't go so great, it is so hard to wait and watch things happen. How frustrating. Hugs!
Sonya is just adorable. Those sleeping pictures are too funny. Preston did that once or twice and once right at the dinner table. Of course i had to take pictures of it too! She is such a beautiful little thing.
I am so sorry that the dentist appointment did not go as expected. i realy hope her teeth come in soon. Did they give you any information on what would happen if more of the tooth chips away before it fully erupts? I seriously once again commend you Melissa. You are an amazing mom to an amazing little girl!
Sonya is a tough lil girl. Beautiful too! Amazing how much you 2 have gone through in such a short amount of time. I sure hope Sonya's teeth erupt quicker than the wear process.
thanks for posting this. My son doesn't have OI but is suppose to have the same issues with his teeth. His haven't even come in yet - he's 14 months old. We have a dentist appt. in july and i have no idea yet if the dentist we're seeing will have enough knowledge about it all - supposedly she's the best one to see in our area so we'll see. I'm glad to be armed with at least some info before we go.
We're going to be trying to get up to dupont soon to have Cohen seen overall.
Hope Sonya's teeth are all the way in the next time you go back!!
thanks for the comment and other links to info.
You are welcome to follow my blog - thanks for wanting too!!I'm assuming you don't mind if I do the same :)
I hate to hear Sonya's appt didn't go as you had hoped. Let's just pray that her teeth come in before her baby ones wear down. Ellie's been having some trouble with her teeth, too. I don't know if you read my blog from last wk but she's already had to have 2 teeth sealed with another one to be done next wk. It is very frustrating when you have no control over their dental health, isn't it.
Wow i have so much to ask you, i just found your site by mistake and would love to ask you some questions i have a 4 1/2 year old with skeltal dys. please email me if you can ayalond@gmail.com
